Mary Bridges Bpt23 May 1677
« on: Tuesday 25 August 20 17:55 BST (UK) »
I am trying to establish that the Mary Bridges above whose bapt I have is 23 May 1677 which dates seem correct was married to Thomas Thompson bpt 10 Sept 1690.  The marriage I have for them which is at St James Dukes Place London 19 June 1708 is backed also by marriage allegation and bonds.
Assuming this is correct and her bapt is correct it gives her parents as Brooke Bridges Esq and Mary Bridges.  This would appear to be Brooke Bridges 1643 and Mary Lewen parentw of the 1 Baronet of Gooderstone.  I can only find noted anywhere that they had 1 son namely Brooke Bridges 1st Baronet of Gooderston born 1679 and I was wondering if my Mary Bridges is their daughter.
Brooke Bridges is a fairly unusual name.

Any help would be gratefully received or any information.  Thanks

Thomas Thompson who married Mary Bridges in 1708 appears to have been a Widower of St Geo. Southwark when he married Mary.  Why do you think he was bapt 1690, he would have been 18 (widowed) and Mary 29.

What did Thomas and Mary name their children

I’ve glanced through the Wills of the related Brook(e) Bridges, but can’t see mention of a daughter Mary Bridges/Thompson.

Mary lived in Crooked Lane in the City at the time of her marriage, and Thomas was a shoe maker.  This doesn’t seem compatible with the Brook Bridges families.  Then again - she did get married in St.James’, which is strange.

Thank you both for your replies.  I couldn't read either the allegation properly which I see does say that Thomas was a widow  I am now doubting all of my findings on these two.  There are so many Thomas Thompson who were baptised around the period1670 - 1680 I really do not know which one is right.  I wish I knew more about parish records or any way I could prove who they were.  thanks for your help

Can I ask why you think living in Crooked Lane and getting married in St James was odd.  I do know that it was a notoriously easy church and they did not always follow the rules and if you wanted a quick married you went here.  Wouldn't be great if she was a disowned daughter and she was living on her own means.  Its ok Ill stop the fantasy now

The only reason I supposed marrying in St.James was strange, was because it wasn’t in either of their parishes.

You’ve taught me something new.   I checked through all the Bridges getting married at St.James around that time, and not one of them came from the local parish!  Now I know why.

No!  A disowned daughter would be a nightmare to prove.

Are you doubting you have the correct marriage?  Can you let us know who Thomas and Mary’s children were.

Thanks for setting out so much information, but I’m afraid I’ve had no luck with taking your tree back further.

I’ve got stuck at Albert’s (b.Brighton 1828) father Francis!

I can find quite a few things about him, but nothing that leads to his parents. The 1851 & 1861 census give his age as 69 and 79 (born 1782) Marylebone.

I see there’s a Francis Thompson born 1782 in Marylebone - parents Francis and Ann.  I can’t find anything to show that this was your Francis.
Were you able to connect him to the James and Jane you have as his parents?  I think I need your help more than you need mine  :D

Sorry I can’t help.  Good luck

hmmm - something doesn't tally
maybe the details on this tree are wrong
you have 1st Baronet of Gooderstone - tree says Goodnestone and 1st Baronet Brooke Bridges married Margretta Marsham

https://gw.geneanet.org/rwmoore?n=bridges&oc=&p=brooke

added - it looks to be Goodnestone
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodnestone_Park

ADDED
The lady named Margretta Marsham that Brooke Birdges married - her grandfather was also a 1st Baronet
   John Marsham
Born 23 August 1602 - parish Of St. Bartholomew, London, Middlesex, England
Deceased 26 May 1685 - Bushy Hall, Hertfordshire, England, aged 82 years old
Buried - Cuxton, near Rochester, Kent, England
    1st Baronet
I hope this is making sense - or am I reading it wrong ??
