I think that answers the question nicely. He died on the voyage, which I thought might have been a possibility.

Guess that means that there was another son born in NZ in 1842/43 after they arrived if there was a surviving son on both parents death certificates. The George that Minniehaha found who died 1905 is the closest fit. Looking in the Cemetery records he is buried in Greytown. Will follow him up a bit and see what I can find.

Hi Ian

Have doubts about the George YATES (d. 1905) being a son ???

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZH19050801.2.52

Newspaper article did state this man "had no relatives in the Colony" ... and of course there were still a number of children of Henry YATES alive in 1905 (who would count as relatives).   :-\

Not much time at present to find this Sam and family ... am thinking though that he left NZ.

Just came across this 1870 bankruptcy notice.

Sam YATES

... can see has been included in some "trees" ( mainly re: Eliza Ann FOX) at ancestry.

Listed mostly as "Samuel Hugh YATES" ... and who is recorded as having died in NZ 1872.
[That is incorrect - seems to have been confused with death for "Samuel Haigh YATES" who along with his twin, Thomas Harry YATES were infant sons of Agnes and late Henry YATES, who died at Wellington aged 3 weeks in February 1872.  ]

NZBDM has death in 1947 for "a Samuel YATES - 76 - bc 1871"  :    (Haven't found death place as yet.)
