Just heard from Westernbay.

The Edward who died 1882 not buried in any of their cemeteries.

Ian C

Jane YATES (formerly WATSON), the widow of above (1882) Edward YATES, died in 1902.   Her death notice gives "Otara Cemetery" as her burial place.

Both John and Jane YATES death certificates indicate one surviving son.

Jane's from 1890 gives his age as 47, which indicates a birth year of 1842/43. Could be Edward but the age is a bit out. Unless it is another son altogether.

Do the diaries of John Henry Cooper the surgeon on the Martha Ridgway exist anywhere? There were a number of births and deaths on the voyage.

Thanks Spades but they seem to be more about the first voyage to Wellington rather than the second to Nelson that the Yates family was on.

Diaries of some of the ships surgeons are around, or ones by a passenger.

Trawling through the male deaths (in the time frame you are looking at) for Yates between 1890 and 1930 I have found the following possibilities:

1912/1822   Yates   Robert   72Y
1910/2759   Yates   Benjamin   69Y
1895/2064   Yates   George   54Y

1905/4948   Yates   George   63Y

Hi Eyesee

http://www.huttcity.govt.nz/Leisure--Culture/Museums-and-galleries/Our-museums/petone-settlers-data/DisplayPerson/?Id=3264&SearchString=MARTHA%2

     *  Click on 2nd link within the result shown  ^  MART0202

Deaths aboard the "MARTHA RIDGWAY" (arrived NZ early 1842 )  >

No ages given, but an Edward GATES - died on 11 December 1841 during the voyage.

There does not appear to have been a GATES family amongst the passengers .... but it could be that YATES has been transcribed as GATES ??  (see an example of mis-transcription of this surname, earlier in this thread.)
