What happened to Joseph Johnston, after 1913, in Shankhill
« on: Monday 31 August 20 21:13 BST (UK) »
I followed Joseph Johnston from his birth 1861/1862 in Co. Tyrone, Ireland to Andrew Johnston and Nancy Wallace although I haven't found his actual baptism. His father Andrew gives his address as Urbal/Urble, Coagh when he married Nancy Wallace and when all his post-1864 children are born. Andrew's father was Joseph, Urble, Parish of Tamlaght. Andrew had 6 children and was a carpenter.
After Nancy's death, Andrew remarried to Rachel  Margaret Lennox and they had 4 children. John Lennox Johnston was the firstborn and he died in 1913. His obit mentions his brother Joe. That is when I backtracked and found Joe, born in Co. Tyrone, and married to Annie Moore in 1885 in Magherafelt, with his  father Andrew, carpenter. All Joseph's children are born in Magherafelt with the youngest being Sophia in 1899. By 1911, Joseph had moved to Shankill but he was alive in 1913 when his half-brother John Lennox Johnston died. But I don't find Joseph again, nor any of the family. Where did they go?
Would love to find Joseph Sr. in Urbal, and his wife's name, possibly Elizabeth, and also Joseph born 1862.
Thanks
Peggy

I am still looking for Joseph and his family post 1911. I tried to attach the census but first of all, it was too big and when I tried to downsize, it was the wrong type of  file.In 1911, Joseph has wife Annie and they are living at house 14, Tudor Place,Shankhill, NOT to  be confused with another Joseph living in Belfast with wife Sarah.
I have made contact with a descendant of Joseph's sister Annie who lived in Salford, Lancashire, England. Her father remembers Joseph coming to visit Annie so Joseph must have lived til at least 1930.
Thanks for any help.

Annie may then have died in 1932?
The OCR text in the papers not good, have you got access to the images?

Good work, John. You are right on track. Thanks for the death of William Johnston in 1910, son of Joseph and Annie. I will have to look for Joseph and Annie's burials in Magherafelt. That is where they were living in 1901 and where all their children were born.
I used the link to Wylie Lennon's website and skipped to 1918. There is a Joseph Johnston, joiner, on 46 Wyndam Street. In 1911, Joseph's niece Elizabeth is  living with him - she is the daughter of Annie's sister Sarah who was married to David Johnson. I know that Annie and Sarah nee Moore are sisters but I don't know if there is a family relationship between Joseph Johnston and David Johnson/Johnston. Anyway, when Eliz. married Samuel Wilgar in 1919, her residence is 46 Wyndham Street (I just found that marriage a few minutes ago). So I feel confident that this is the correct Joseph Johnston living on 46 Wyndham meaning that he was still alive in 1918.
Thanks for all your help.

Wow, John, you are a real detective. I am sure you have found the correct dates of death for Joseph and Annie. I wonder if they are buried near Joseph's father Andrew, who died in Magherafelt although I don't know where he is buried.
I do have a one month subscription to British Newspaper Archive which will  expire any minute but I  was able to access the death notices that you gave me.
thank you so very much. This is incredible info. If only I could find Andrew's mother which I have looked long and hard for. His father was Joseph as per his two  marriages.
Thanks again

I noticed that in 1932, John S. Brown was living at 46 Wyndham so I looked to  see if he perhaps married one of Joseph's daughters but no luck so far.

Hi
Pleased to hear you got hold of the death notices. Those newspapers come in handy!
Good luck with the search for Andrew's mum, hope you get somewhere with her.
