Maureen, thank you for the fresh eyes!! Indeed that's them. It begs the question as to his birth name noe--Joseph Marsh or George Richard Matthews. The chase continues.

HI Maureen
That's astonishing! Both the fact that they were living under an assumed identity and that you found it for me - thank you so much.
I noticed on the newspaper cutting John referred to in 1872 that George was using the name Joseph Matthews, what on earth were they running from.
There is no way I would have found out all of this on my own and it is so exciting

If the 1871 census is to be believed then Joseph was born c1836 Bridport Dorset. The closest I can get is the link below with a father William. Beaminster is approx 8 miles from Bridport.

Hi John
He died on the 15th Sept and the death was registered by the coroner in the 'Manor of Ogmore'. The inquest was on the 16th and 19th of September 1895 but I haven't been able to find the inquest and I can't read the name of the quarry but it looks like the parish of Eurenny (?) and he died at the railway huts. There is no name of any individual apart from the coroner on the death certificate.
I think that your 1881 contender is great, it fits so well that it must be him.
In 1861 just a few weeks after their wedding Jane and Richard were living in Topsham with her family and despite all the other lies he was still saying that he worked on the railway although then it was as a horse driver. The coroner said that he was 'about' 54 years old as opposed to his 58 years so they don't seem to have known much about him
