The ROSE family, Leicester, after 1901
« on: Thursday 17 September 20 15:52 BST (UK) »
The 1901 census has the following family living in court D, Pasture Lane,St Margarets, Leic:

John Rose, age 48, b Loughborough, bricklayer's assistant
Sarah Rose, his wife, age 54,b Nuneaton, Warwickshire
Lucy Ellen Holland Rose, age 4, b Loughborough, adopted daughter.

I would like to know what became of Lucy. I think she was born Lucy Holyland, and when she was tiny, her parents were jailed for neglecting her. Hence she ended up with another family.

I can't see any certain trace of John, Sarah or Lucy after this date though. Not in the death registrations, nor in Welford Rd, nor in the 1911 census; no marriage for Lucy --  There is a possible grave in Gilroes for a John Rose buried in 1935 age 81, and Sarah Rose buried in 1928 age 71, both of Harold St -- but the age is out for Sarah.

Can anyone see any other leads?

Maggsie, I don't have a dob but I think it was later than that. Lucy Holyland's birth was registered in the March quarter 1897, and the newspaper report which states that she was 3 months old was dated April 1897.

Where did that date of birth come from? If that was Lucy Elen Rose's dob then I don't think she would be "my" Lucy

Willsy, thanks for looking - so I can rule out those Gilroes burials.

I think she was born Lucy Holyland,

Can I ask what links this Lucy to Lucy Ellen?

Good question.

Lucy Holyland's birth was registered in q1 of 1897 in Loughborough. Neither the name Lucy nor the place Loughborough appears in any other Holyland registrations so immediately that makes her an outlier. MMN Smith. There were no matching Holyland-Smith marriages.

There was a court case re John Holyland and his "wife" Clara in April 1897 when they were convicted of neglecting their 2 (unnamed) children, the younger aged 3 months. Their address was simply "The Rushes" --I understand that's Loughborough. There are no John H/Clara marriages. However, John H and Clara Beaumont/Holyland were in court 18 months earlier when a toddler of theirs died after being smothered when they were drunk. The circmstances sound very similar. This other child, plus another older one (so 3 in total) also had the mmn Smith, so I feel this is all one family. Clara Beaumont lived as the wife of John Holyland but it clearly says in the first court case that they weren't married.

Lucy Holyland then disappears (and so does Clara Smith/Beaumont/Holyland, as far as I can see. although she's not a "person of interest" to me other than as protagonist in the story). I was wondering what happened to little Lucy as she was alive when the neglect case had gone to court. Searching for a Lucy b Loughborough in 1897 throws up v few hits -- but there is this one, Lucy Ellen Holland Rose. I see that John Rose was from Loughborough, so would have had family contacts there who knew of this little mite. And the Holyland surname not infrequently deviated or varied into Holland.

(There was a Lucy Ellen Denby with b reg in L/bro in 2nd q 1897, but she was still around under that name in the 1901 and 1911 censuses).

So I don't have PROOF that Lucy Holyland and Lucy Ellen Holland Rose are the same child but the circumstantial evidence seems strong.

in the 1901 census, John Holyland was in Syston (where he was born) with 8 year old Hetty Holyland (his first child with Clara -- Florence Hetty Beaumont Holyland to give her her full name). Neither Clara nor the youngest child was with them. John was 42, Hetty 8 -- it says he was a widow, but he never actually married.

Thanks, I was just looking for Florence Hetty.

Was Lily Harriett another one?  Wondered if they were together with Lucy but I guess not  :-\
