Thanks to everyone who found him so quickly.

The Kent marriage definitely looks like the right one. I don't know why I couldn't find it, I had name variants on.
I tentatively had him in the army in Kent in 1871, but wasn't sure it was him or the other John Annetts from Chilton who is his half nephew (son of his much older half brother) who is my next chap to track down.....
Looks like he might have met and married a local girl then gone back to Berkshire but a different part of the county from his birth. To change from innkeeper to farmer sounds a bit odd. I have a number of innkeepers in my family, but they have usually changed to that in later life after giving up a more manual occupation.

Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott
