Handwriting query - William Bartlett 1861
« on: Friday 18 September 20 17:28 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I can't for the life of me work out where this location is meant to be in the 1861 census for William Bartlett, born 1874. Can't figure the handwriting out. I already have his birth down as Topsham, and am pretty confident, but any more info is always helpful. Can't think of anywhere around this area that seems to fit?

Best wishes
Sam

sorry, all I can make out is "Devonshire".

I've referred to all the places in Devonshire listed in Wikipedia and also Genuki, but can't make a positive I.D. other than the town probably starts with an "H".

I think perhaps it reads Harderton, meaning Harberton, which is only a couple of miles from Totnes.

David

PS Ah, I see you wanted Topsham, not Totnes. Can't see anywhere in that area which fits.

Thank you both for the reference  :).

I was looking on F M P for him and William Bartlett born Devon in 1794 did not match with anyone, maybe because they have not transcribed his surname and have his year of birth as 1793.  It is always a good idea to give a reference Sam when you are after help with census entries.  FindMyPast have transcribed it as Harderton
