DNA match
« on: Saturday 19 September 20 18:43 BST (UK) »
Hello

I have a match with 251cM over 10 segments is this likely that we share a half great great Aunt or Uncle? Opinions welcome, I’m new to dna so I’m still learning  :o

Many thanks

If you click on the amount of cM you share it will give you an idea of your connection. Do they have a tree? I have a match 267cM across 11 segments...we have the same great grandparents.

Welcome to the forum.

Having such a match is one thing and actually finding a link to them is another matter.  I am in a similar situation with 364cM over 13 segments and she has no tree and no surname or forename that fits in with my tree.

If I assume you are on Ancestry if you select your match then click on Shared Matches you will hopefully find other matches that share DNA with you and your match.  You can then use the Group feature to give all the matches a colour coded tag and name it to suit, I used the form Maureen Lewis & Me for my close match so I can keep going back and seeing if any of the matches have trees that have grown significantly. If any of the shared matches also have a Common Ancestor then following up on them can expand your own tree.  I have match 30+ distant Cousins so far and included branches to them in my tree.

Lewis btw is a made up surname as we cannot post the names of living people on the forum.

Good luck in your research.

If you have an idea of the side of the family you could.message them and ask if they are descended from .... name a set of your great grandparents year and a location
.
Even if you are wrong they may reply with another possible connection .

Thank you all for your replies  :)
The match has not responded to any messages so I've given up on that front. They do have a tree though with my great grandmothers brother/half brother in it I just wanted to confirm it. My great grandmother had her mother's surname and a blank space for the father on her birth certificate.
