Arkengarthdale Chapel photo date please
« on: Sunday 20 September 20 13:16 BST (UK) »
Please would someone be able to date this photo. It was taken outside Arkengarthdale Chapel in the Dales of North Yorkshire. My interest here is the “Hird” family, several of which are named in the photo. In particular, front row, 3rd from left is “Nellie Hird”. I am wondering if it is the same “Nellie Hird” who was born in 1891. I thought the photo looked older than for someone born that year.
If It’s not her then it would be another Nellie Hird in the same family, maybe a previous generation.

Very difficult to date as they are all in fancy dress, but bumping the photo up to see if anybody can help.

I would assume that some of these costumes have been adapted from contemporary
outfits as I doubt they would have the money to buy or make them specially for the
production.
So on that basis I would suggest 1880's-90's.

Thank you Jim for your reply. It’s certainly practical way of looking at it.

Yes it does make it difficult, I don’t suppose that is a real minister either.

Woman holding baby had an unusual expanse of leg on show. She was wearing shoes with narrow toes. The people may have been wearing their own shoes.
Impressive facial foliage on some of the men.

I was wondering about the facial hair. Thinking at least one of them had a false beard.

To me it looks like the cast of a period play, maybe taken as late as the 1930s.
