Metcalfes of Bury St Edmunds
« on: Sunday 20 September 20 21:06 BST (UK) »
I am looking for help with the Metcalfe family. I have a George William Metcalfe married to Susanna Oxborrow in 1889.
I know they resided in Bury St Edmunds and I'm looking for help with their children. I cannot locate baptism records and am keen to know if any have military service in WWI
I am looking for help with: William Frank Metcalfe born 1893, Owen Maurice Metcalfe born 1895/1896 and Sidney Horrace Metcalfe born 1901.
Any help is greatly appreciated

The Metcalfe family are in a lot of trees on Ancestry.  Worth making contact with some of the tree owners?
I cannot see anything for those 3 in military records under their full names.

However, Owen was actually registered as Maurice Owen in September quarter 1895 (from GRO), and there is an M O Metcalfe record here:

so probably worth looking in the National Archives - do not know what is still free, try registering to find out.
(He was a Sergeant, with regimental service number 14289)

Greetings, and a warm welcome to Rootschat.

The way forward would be:

1) Trace the sons on the 1911 Census and see where they were living, whether or not they were scholars or employed, and what was their father's occupation.  (Depending on their social status this may help determine if they may have been officers or other ranks).

2) Check the Absent Voters Register 1918 (available on paysites) to see if they were registered to vote in their local area.

3) Check the Medal Roll Index Cards (available on paysites) for any service medals issued - the cards would give dates, ranks, and (for the Army) regiments or corps

4) If any of them were "other ranks" there is a possibility that their service records still exist (although many were destroyed by fire).  If they were officers their appointments and promotions will be found in The Gazette (the official public record searchable free online).

5) If any of them were married during the war their occupations listed on the marriage certificates might show them in the Armed Forces.

Good hunting!

Philip

Don't know where you got 'Kingston upon Hull' from Suzard!   Other than ones born Ipswich they were all born in Bury St. Edmunds.

Sidney Horace does not appear to have married/had issue.

William Frank married 1922 but no issue.

Maurice Owen married 1923 - one child Sidney born 3 years before.

Big apologies - children were born Berwick on tweed - I was trying to multitask with a family from Kingston on Hull - I am obviously not a multi tasker

Apologies again

Oh Suz, you've done it again - the children born Bury St. Edmunds (not Berwick on Tweed).
