Tiltman in Sussex
« on: Thursday 25 August 05 22:15 BST (UK) »
I have a marriage certificate showing the marriage of Annie Tiltman in 1872 in Fairlight, Hastings.   She gave her age as 22 (although that could be wrong, since her 18-year-old husband said he was 21).  Her father was John Tiltman, Boatman.  I've looked for the family on the 1871 census but can't find Annie.  There's a probable John Tiltman, born 1822/3 in Hastings, married to Caroline, living in Rye with four children - but no Annie.  On the 1861 census there's a Hannah Tiltman b. 1852/3, daughter of John H., born 1822 but in Rye, and it's a different family.
Has anyone any ideas about Annie?  She died in 1879.

Hi Sutton Trust

There is this entry in the 1851 census for Hastings

HO107/ 1635/ Folio 104/ Page 6 - Clements Fields, Ore, Hastings

TILTMAN  John, Head, Marr, 33, Well Digger, born Birchington, Kent
.............  Charlotte, Wife, Marr, 24, born Hastings
.............  John, Son, Unm, 11, born Hastings
.............  Horatio, Son, Unm, 6, born Fairlight
.............  George, Son, Unm, 4, born Ore
.............  Anne, Dau, Unm, 2, born Ore

This is the only family in the Pett, Guestling, Fairlight, Ore and the All Saints part of Hastings with that surname

Hi again

Here they are in 1861

As you can see, they have been transcribed as Feltman instead of Tiltman - I have checked the original census return and it is Tiltman.

RG9/ 559/ Folio 79/ Page 51 - St Thomas Field, Ore

Albert Feltman, 10, born Ore, Sussex, Son.
Ann Feltman, 12, born Ore, Sussex, Daughter.
Charlotte Feltman, 33, born Hastings, Sussex, Wife.
Charlotte Feltman, 6, born Ore, Sussex, Daughter.
George Feltman, 14, born Ore, Sussex, Son. Confectioners Appr
Horatio Feltman, 15, born Fairlight, Sussex, Son. Seaman
John Feltman, 43, born Birchington, Kent, Head.
Nelson Feltman, 1, born Ore Sussex, Son.  Pleasure Boatman
Thomas Feltman, 8, born Ore, Sussex, Son.

Hope that helps

Hi

Even poor old Horatio Tiltman has a wrong transcription with his new wife, even though he is still residing in the All Saints part of Hastings.

Emma Tillman, 31, Aldgate, Middlesex, Daughter.
Horatio Tillman, 25, Fairlight, Sussex, Son-in-law.

Looks like you have picked an ancestor who is very confusing to the transcribers

Luckily John is not actually my ancestor.  Annie was my grandfather's first wife.  How nice that Horatio married Emma!  Patriotic lot!
Thanks, Chris

Hi

I have quite a lot of info on the Tiltmans. My great grandmother Emily had a sister Ann, she may be who you are looking for although dates not quite exact.

There are lots of Tiltmans in contact currently from Durham through to IOW!!

Let me know where to forward the info.

Hi.  Annie Tiltman was my grandfather's first wife.  I don't have a sister Emily for her.  I just know that her parents were John and Charlotte and she was born in Ore, Hastings.  I have a death date of 1879.  If this is one of yours, it would be great if you could PM me.
