looking for a marriage/marriages please possibly woburn 1850's
« on: Thursday 01 October 20 18:14 BST (UK) »
Hi
1861 census has a William Walker born Chalgrove Beds about 1832. He is married to Elizabeth born 1834 Bicester (although in 1871 she is 40 years old giving a birth date of 1831). They have numerous children all born in Woburn. The first, Charles Edward, was baptised September 1855 to William and Jane. The rest, starting with William George baptised September 1857, are all born to William and Elizabeth Sarah. I'm trying to find out who William and Elizabeth's parents were, but am stuck for getting any further back because I can't find the marriages for these two wives. (Or is it really one wife with a mistranscription?) The 1851 census is of no use as William was away from home. Does anyone have access to parish records for the Bedfordshire area please, who could look up these two marriages for me? Many thanks.

Looking at the GRO birth index - the maiden name of the mother for BOTH these children was HOLT. Hence - you would think it was the same mother.

Oooh thanks! That's brilliant! Thank you very much. Is this info available online anywhere? It's certainly not there on FreeBMD which is the site I use a lot. If there's a site with more info I'd be better using that in future.

Jacksi -- now the General Register office are showing mother's maiden names for births from 1837.

If you haven't used the site before you will need to register - but it's free to search. You can also order certificates from that site if you wish.

https://www.gov.uk/general-register-office

Once you have registered - simply go to 'Search the GRO indexes.'

It is a bit cumbersome in that you can search a particular year and plus or minus 2 years. You also have to identify the sex.

In your case I actually found the year and registration district on FreeBMD first - so that I knew which District to input - as you cannot search by County on the GRO Index.

Finding a mother's maiden name is SO useful though.

(You can also find ages at death from 1837 -- ie before the year they appear on Free BMD.)

You cannot search for marriages on that site.

I cannot find a marriage for your William Walker at the moment.

Wow that's absolutely fantastic! I didn't know any of this! That info on there will be of great use because its very infuriating looking on freebmd sometimes isn't it? I will register now! Thanks for your help!

Jackski - you are welcome. You can check the maiden names shown against the births of the other children out of interest.

(It is always possible that William and Elizabeth didn't actually marry - I can't find a marriage, but some super sleuth may be able to do so!)

Also just for info -- if you want a birth or death cert - you can order a PDF copy from the General Register Office -GRO -- it's £7 as opposed to £11 for ordering a paper certificate. You cannot do that for marriages though.
