Ah Keith -- it only said 'resided town' - so it doesn't mean he was actually born there in Barnsley. That would explain perhaps, why there is no birth registration in that area for him at that time.

So we look for a birth Q/E Sept 1909 -- or, if it was registered later, Q/E Dec 1909, initially in England!

I am closing down now but will look tomorrow - unless you find possibilities before then (there are none in Yorkshire!!)
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Hi Pennines,

Thank you, this is all fascinating

Almost like a crime novel, I am an author and my plots are straightforward

Thank you for spending the time to help me.

I was thinking there was a strong possibility that when he was caught by the Germans he falsified his details

Well there are 2 possible births -- both in Staffordshire -- both Q/E December 1909.

One in Dudley Registration District and one in West Bromwich Registration District. Both shown as John Thomas Aston.

One of these men died in 2004, South Staffordshire - but his actual birth DATE differs from that of the soldier.

Quickly looking at probate records - there are quite a lot for males of that name! Needs a bit of time spending on it -- Keith, have you any idea when John Thomas died please?

Pennines,

I am so sorry to have possibly gone down the wrong road?  Rosie99 mentioned a James George Aston Married a Gertrude Hicks (Padbury) Jan 1952 ? Christchurch Hants ...James George Aston died 21 Dec 2003 Southampton...DOB 16 Oct 1913.

I only bring this information to your attention only because I was given different info by a family member and traced the soldier ...but I have received overnight from her daughter that her grandfathers nick name was Jimmy (James) .

I wholeheartedly apologise for wasting your time ...and mine
