Tottenham Cemetery

Dear All

Do you live anywhere near to Enfield Crematorium, Great Cambridge Road, Enfield, London EN1 4DS?  If so, would you be willing to visit and request to see the burial register of Tottenham Cemetery for Apr/Jun 1913?

James Edward Shrubsall died aged 41 in Apr/Jun 1913 in Tottenham and I would like to know of he was buried in Tottenham Cemetery and details of any others buried in the same grave/plot.

Kind Regards
Nick Cotton

Enfield Crematorium opened in 1938,so your James could not be buried there.

I would email them and see what info they can give you.

My request was about the burial registers of Tottenham Cemetery which are kept at Enfield Crematorium which charges £24 for a burial search in old registers, which I would like to avoid as the deceased was not related to me.  I cannot afford to shell out for burial searches so I was hoping someone living locally would visit the Crematorium where the burial register is kept.  I have asked Haringey Council if the old registers can be scanned and added to the Deceased Online website as many other London Boroughs have done.

Have you confirmed that access to these registers is available at the moment.

Thanks Rosie, I just checked and the office is closed due to COVID-19.  I was advised that in any case the registers are inaccessible to the public since Dignity took over the management of Tottenham Cemetery from Haringey Council which did allow access as most other cemetery offices do.  So it will be £24 payable to Dignity for a burial search.  In comparison, it costs only £1.50 to obtain a Will and Grant of Probate from the Probate Office!  These registers should be added to the Deceased Online website as most London Boroughs have done with their burial and cremation registers.

I suppose it is up to each local authority what they do with their burial registers and whether they consider it is worth it financially to offer them to Deceased online.

Yes, of course, but if the registers are added to Deceased Online, it means that the staff in the cemetery/crematorium offices should receive fewer enquiries and it shortens the time to locate a burial or cremation if more registers are added to Deceased Online, so a win-win situation for bereavement services officers and researchers like me.

I suspect at £24 a look up they are happy to continue as they are.
