Thanks for your help, folks.

Does anyone know whether gout was a euphemism for something else in the 19th century?
I've found one person who died of "gout in the stomach" and another of "metastatic gout".
Isn't it usually cancer that forms metastases?

Altogether I get the feeling that doctors didn't have much idea what the real causes were, and wrote down symptoms instead.

I've puzzled over this, and the best I can come up with is a misspelling of diarrhoea.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

I think you are right ,because after it says “about three months “I think.
So diarrhoea .

Thanks, Arthur.

You'd think it would be a requirement for registrars to be able to write legibly.
Similarly for census enumerators, though the authorities probably had to settle for what they could get.
