I am looking for the father of Agnes Cade (b. circa 1862) and William Cade (b. 28 Dec 1864).

William Cade is my Dad's Great Grandfather.

They show up in the 1871 Census in Abbotsley seemingly with their parents Sarah Cade and Joseph Cade, but Sarah and Joseph are brother and sister in the 1851 Census and 1861 Census.

One explaination is that this is a different Sarah, but I cannot find a marriage for Joseph Cade. Another is that the census was recorded incorrectly and that Agnes and William are bastards. Another is unthinkable..

Any help as to where I could try and find christening or birth information on Agnes and William?

Many thanks,

Kat

Hi,

Welcome to RootsChat :)

You can find their birth registraions at the GRO site here,

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/login.asp

You have to register but it is free to search.

Agnes and William are both there but it shows no Mother's Maiden surname so it seems Sarah wasn't married.

I can see Sarah and William on the 1881 census,

1881  RG11/1611  f.113  p.10  Abbotsley,  Huntingdonshire
High St.

Sarah CADE    Head    Unm    48    Lacemaker    Hunts Abbotsley
William  "        Son    "      16    Agricultural Labourer        "        "

Note Sarah says she is unmarried.

Regards,
Daisy

Thank you both so much for getting back to be so quickly. That is all very helpful!

I shall register on the GRO website.

In the 1881 Census William is living with Sarah who is unmarried, which is why it is odd that in the 1971 census it says she is married to Joseph and William and Agnes are his son and daughter. Joseph died in 1876 which is why he is not on the 1881 census. It seems as though it may remain a mystery!

Many thanks,

Kat

Looking at the image of the 1871 census it looks like Joseph's marital status and "Wife" for Sarah could have been altered/written over. Perhaps when the enumerator just assumed they were married when he entered their information from the forms into the books :-\

Have you seen this site?  there is a picture and some submitted info about William CADE.

There are three baptisms of children born to Sarah Cade at Abbotsley:
Agnes  1862
Emily    1865
William  1867

(the index these are from only shows name, year and parents)

I can't see Emily on the GRO birth index, nor an obvious death registration.

IT WAS THE BLACKSMITH! That is incredible thank you so much Rosie99! You have solved a family mystery that my Dad has wondered about for 40 years!

Galium, we did not know about Emily. That is very interesting I shall add her to our family tree and try and find more information.

I am so glad I posted, you have all been amazingly generous and helpful! x
