Oates Of Worksop
« on: Wednesday 21 October 20 21:20 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone knows about the originally history of this company?

I am looking at my great great grandmother Julia Oates (born about 1858). She apparently was a relative of Oates of Worksop who were timber merchants. Anyone know the history of this place and the owners? Julia's father was William Oates. Would he have owned it? I have loads of family history photos with no clue who they are.

A long shot but people have been rather good at searching out things on here!

Thank you
MJ
Fouldes.<br />Any area where our family are.  My branch started around Derbyshire, Nott's and Yorkshire.  We ended up in South Lincolnshire!  So yay!  Course any area with Fouldes in would help!  See my family tree below for what gaps I have!  Cheers!

Would also like to see any Beaumont's from Sheffield as I have lots of family photos & can't identify them!!

What was William Oates' occupation on Julia's birth and marriage certificates, and what was it on the census records?

I thought Worksop was in Notts?  This is the West Riding board.

Oh you are right! On the census it says she was born in Wadsley Bridge (a suburb of Sheffield) so I came here. In a moment of head-fluff I thought Worksop must be nearby! I should have looked.

Well I guess they still could be related to the Worksop business. I guess I need to go to the Nottinghamshire board.

Apologies for the mispost!

I don't have Julia's birth certificate but on the marriage one her father, William, was listed as a Cab Driver! So it could be her grandparents or Uncles or something may be related to the Oates company.

Sadly I don't know William's occupation on the censuses as I do not have images to the census. I think someone once posted the details of the name, age and address of the census. But they left out places of birth and occupation of people. One day, when I am a little richer, I really must get access to these censuses myself.

Thanks again

FamilySearch is free. Sometimes censuses are missing, but I have found most I have looked for. I have never paid subscription to any site.
