John Cantle
« on: Friday 23 October 20 00:44 BST (UK) »
Good Morning all, I know I have searched for this ancestor for awhile, but looking at his marriage to Dinah Hall on the 1/2/1769 by Banns at Syston his parish was named Billon I haven't a clue where this place is, perhaps it is a lead where some of Cantle ancestors came from e.g. his parents James and a Ann?. I have searched a long time, especially to find a daughter named Mary born 22/5/1779 Bitton and baptised on the same day as John Cantle mother unknown 24/5/1779 Brethren's Chapel Kingswood. I have this record, and don't understand what Whitmonday means. :-X Would love help. :-\

Regards,
Janet :-[

Whit Monday is the Monday after the Pentecost, which is celebrated the 50th day after Easter Sunday,

BILLON might be BITTON with a very faint or no crossing of the Ts

Mary’s mother is not Unknown, it says clearly she is the daughter of John Cantle and his wife.  But sadly doesn’t name the wife.

I wonder why John was able to supply an exact date of birth (jan 25 1737) for himself but not the names of his parents.

If you look at the Bitton Families website on line, the Cantle’s are Baptists  from very early on.  A good article on The Keynsham Baptist Church in the website, mentions a number of Cantle’s.

Afternoon Capetown, I have searched this web site a number of times, their index of baptisms, marriages and burial, no mention of the Cantle name only that they were members of the Baptist Church. :-[

John would have had the Family Bible, where his date of birth was written.

I've got my husband's Family Bible, from mid 19th century - with all the births/marriages and deaths records.

This is how some family records were kept.

There is a tree on Ancestry - which gives  John CANTLE (fahter James)  and being married twice.

Marriage 1 May 1760 - Bitton, Gloucestershire to Anna PALMER -

1762, Birth of Son : John CANTLE, 1762, Hanham Abbots, Gloucestershire

1767, Death of Wife : Anna - Bitton Gloucester  (death on Ancestry 9 August 1768)
1768, Death of Father : James

etc etc

Looking at the first and second marriage of John Cantle - the signature appears to be the same.

His occupation on the first marriage is Coalminer.
