Weslyan Preacher Hayle circuit
« on: Friday 23 October 20 16:16 BST (UK) »
"Is there anyone who can help me find out more about my ancestors life as a Methodist Preacher ?". Richard James(born 1873) was a seafarer who found another calling at some point in his life.. there is a rumour in my family that Richard preached at the Weslyan Hayle church in Cornwall around 1910. I would like to confirm this . I am grateful for any support . Thank you.

The Methodist Church has a tradition of "Lay Preachers" -- ordinary members of the congregation who undertake some training to be able to conduct services of worship (but not baptisms, marriages, funerals etc) -- so if your ancestor was a Lay Preacher rather than an Ordained Minister there might be very little to find out about his preaching.

There's a very lengthy report in the Cornishman, 4 Nov 1925, on the funeral of Richard James of Tolview, Hayle performed in the Foundry Wesleyan Chapel. He was aged 52 (born c. 1873).
Family named included  "brother F James, ... daughters Miss E James, Miss D James, Miss A D James ..." + so many others.

Does this sound like your "rellie"? It mentions " ... he went the length and breadth of this circuit to preach ...".

His occupation was not "mariner" at time of death.

Another newspaper, in reporting the death, reports -
"brother Frank James (with another in America)"
"his serving aboard H.M.S Majestic ... sunk in the Dardanelles"
"born in Newlyn"

hanes teulu, that funeral report is him and already found in earlier post.  It mentions his father in law.  :)

You all have the right man here. Richard was certainly a popular man and the Obituary proves this , as well as his strength of Faith. Thanks for all your assistance and interest here .
