Devon Nankivells
« on: Sunday 01 November 20 21:52 GMT (UK) »
I am having a discussion with another Nankivell family member.  Thomas Nankivell born circ 1832, in Devon, married Ann Rich. Not  in dispute. What is disputed is his parents. Some say s/o  John and Mary Bowden,  which I dispute, as they married in 1809 with 5  chn born in Cornwall,  last one in 1818.  So moving to Devon and having another son 14 years later with the mother being over 55 is highly unlikely.
Thoughts please? or anyone have access to the 1841 devon census?
Thanks

Who does he name as his father when he marries?

Is he with anyone in 1851 or on his own?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire

1841 transcribed as Henkwell

Mary 50
Nancy 15
Grace 10
Thomas 9

1851

Mary Nankivell 60
Thomas Nankivell son 19

There is indeed a baptism record for Thomas born 27 Feb 1832 which names parents as
John Nankivel and Mary Bowden.

Thomas' mother Mary was born around 1791 so she would have been about 41 in 1832, not 55. She said she was born in Ashburton, Devon.

Perhaps this one:

Mary BOWDEN
Baptism Date:    22 May 1791
Baptism Place:    Ashburton,Devon,England
Father:    Wm BOWDEN
Mother:    Mary
FHL Film Number:    916801

So you think it credible, that after 6 children 1807 to 1818 in Ruan Lanihorne, that John and Mary would wait 14 years then go to another county to have Thomas, then go back to Ruan without him?
This is the family in 1841

1841 ruan lanihorne census

You have the wrong family.  Milliepede has posted the 1841 and 1851 census records for Thomas in Devon.

The possible marriage for your couple in Calstock in 1809 indicates that they did not normally reside there.

If the Ruan couple had their first child in 1807 then this is probably their marriage in 1806.

There seems to be 2 marriages same month, one in Ruan, 1 in Calstock. The Ruan one was witnessed by his sister Nancy.
I have such a hard time with the Devon Nankivells, as unlike COPC, there is no easy access to Devon records,
