Coincidence our great aunt Hetty was a dresser in Liverpool for Hetty King the performer .I wonder if that's where she picked up the glamourous shortened form ?

Thanks to you all. I'll start trawling through records using most of your suggestions - never would have thought of "Hedwig" myself ( although as she was a lancashire lass, apparently, I suspect that wouldn't have been her name!)
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

If you know her surname I think I would put that in and give a few  years either side of when you think she was born and where, she might just pop up, just a suggestion

Trouble is I'm not actually quite sure of the surname. I've even met the woman, but OH's Mum used to talk about her a lot, but never saw any of her names written down, either the stage names or the "real" ones, and not sure if "real" was maiden or married.
-You've dredged up a wonderful collection of "Hettie"s, between you! I'm sure there's an anthology of Hetties there waiting to be written.
Thank you all, again.
