Edward Johnson 1845 - 1890 | Had the wrong parents for him
« on: Saturday 07 November 20 23:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

Looking for Edward Johnson's parents.

I have his marriage to a Harriet Rebecca Rump in 1874, Croydon, Surrey. His father is listed as John Johnson and his occupation as a Shoe Maker. In the presence of: Mary Ann Johnson & William Johnson. Edward's occupation: Gardener

I then have him in 1881 Lambeth, London with Harriet and his children. It lists his birth place as Suffolk, England. Born in 1845.

Now I've had a John Johnson and Mary Ann Carter in as his parents. With a baptism in 1850 in Whatfield, Suffolk. Even gone up several layers with them. But having discovered more ways to search for your ancestry from this site. I now think this is wrong.

In the 1851 & 1861 census where I have Edward Johnson and John Johnson, it has his fathers job as a Agricultural Labourer in both. Which seems odd considering the shoe maker. A William Johnson from the wedding never shows up either.

Now knowing about GRO. I searched on there for Edward Johnson and his mother's maiden name but Carter didn't come up.

I have now found in the 1851 census a John Johnson and his wife Mary Ann living in Ipswich, Suffolk. His occupation as a master Shoe Maker. Born in 1822, Ipswich.

But I'm struggling to link this further to Edward Johnson. He would be about six in 1851 so it's odd he's not living with them.

It could be that John Johnson & Mary Ann Carter is correct but I just don't know anymore.

Thanks for reading.

Since your Edward Johnson was married and living in Lambeth in 1881, I would say he is the Edward Johnson bc1846 Whatfield who was living in Lambeth in 1871.

Very well spotted Annette - particularly as  the Ancestry transcription of his birthplace is Falkland Islands (Malvinas) Walfield  ???  The image says Suffolk - Walfield  ::)

Thanks to you both. So you do think the John Johnson & Mary Ann Carter is correct. Do you know of any reason of why the occupations don't line up? Shoe maker seems a different world to an agricultural labourer.

In 1861 both Edward & father John are shown as b Whatfield & are both agricultural labourers.

Very inconsiderate of Edward to die before the 1891 census when we just may have got his actual birthplace in Suffolk  ;D
