Charlotte Watson born Westham
« on: Sunday 08 November 20 09:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

From the 1861 census (RG9/566) there is a Charlotte Watson aged 8 described as "Grand Daughter" to John Watson and his wife Charlotte (nee Foord) - both aged 57. Also at home is John and Charlotte's son Amos. By 1871 John Charlotte and Amos are still in Mill Hill, Westham but "Charlotte" is not with them. I am having great difficulty in finding anything else to do with this "Grand Daughter" and would appreciate some help in finding her.

I currently think her birth is registered Jan 1853 as Elizabeth Charlotte Watson Watson at Eastbourne but as the GRO records does not show a mothers name, I am assuming she was illegitimate. I think her mother would either be Elizabeth Watson (born 1829) or Jemima Watson born (1835). Elizabeth (1829) married John Taylor in 1863 and died at Brighton in 1898; I cannot find Jemima.

As an aside one of John and Charlotte's other children Alfred John Watson (1832) married in 1859 and had a daughter who was called Elizabeth Charlotte Watson but she was born in 1864 in Bexhill
and died in 1899 after marrying a James Smith in 1887.

Hope this makes sense.

Alan

Hi,

Thank you both.

I will see if I can find anything else about Eliza Watson in St Marylebone and come back. Can you find anything about a couple of John and Charlotte's other children - Jemima Born 1835 and Andrew born 1834?

There are two others I can't trace but don't want to be greedy!

Alan

She was Jemima Ann and he was John Andrew.

They also had Alfred John bap 5 Feb 1832, Edwin bap 7 Apr 1833, Amos Samuel bap. 5 Nov 1836 & Sarah Ann bap 5 Aug 1838 although I can't see an appropriate GRO entry for her unless it is the one registered in Eastbourne Jul 1838 with no mmn.

Modified to add that all the above record the parents as John & Charlotte Watson of Westham as parents and he is a labourer.

Hello Pheno,

Thank you for the childrens full names - John & Charlotte married Feb 1829 and the 8 children I currently have as -
Elizabeth (Ann) 1829; Alfred John 1832; Edwin 1833; Andrew 1834; Jemima 1835; Amos 1837; Sarah 1839; and Ann 1839.

It looks like there is more to this family than I imagined - more work needed!

Hello,

Apologises for the delay in replying to you all but the full christian names of John and Charlotte's 8 children set me on a path that provided lots of children/grandchildren etc and it has taken time to explore them. As an example Jemima Ann had 6 children and 14 grandchildren so I have been quite busy in lockdown!.

I am left with the original enquiry for  Elizabeth Charlotte Watson (born 1853) and the entry in Marylebone in 1881 - her age on the census document is 22 suggesting she was born c1858 so it is uncertain whether it is her or not. I cannot see her in 1891 - this particular lady remans a mystery.

Of the original 8 children, I have not managed to trace 3 of them after 1851 and I suspect they may have travelled to USA as their nephew emigrated there in 1881. I  don't know what persuaded him to go there but am wondering if he chose to follow in their footsteps?

To explore this further I intend to post a separate enquiry on the USA board.

Thank you for your time and help with this one.

Alan
