Edward James Robinson regiment help
« on: Tuesday 10 November 20 12:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi!
I am struggling to find any records of my great grandfathers service (although I’m aware they may not even exist anymore) I have found an entry which may be a possibility. I am unaware which regiment he was in and it might help to locate him if I knew that. I know it’s not the best photo (although the original) but I was wondering if anyone would be able to see any clues as to what regiment he was in? I can see something on his shoulder but it’s not very clear!
Many thanks in advance for your help

It appears that his army records have not survived. Looking at his shoulder title, it's short and possibly ends with an R. KRR perhaps?

Ah that’s as I feared! Never mind, thank you very much for double checking!
The one record I did find that interested me was for Edward James Robison in the Royal Engineers Railway transport division. I know he worked on the railways before the war as his daughter told me. All I was ever told was that he came back a different man (didn’t they all) He was gassed and suffered ill health for the rest of his life. He is listed as an ‘invalid’ on the 1939 register.

That shoulder title is very short and could be RE.

Sapper Edward James Robinson WR 263841, born circa 1883, resided in Birmingham per the transcribed details from his pension index card on Fold 3 (which I don't have a sub for). Ticks a few boxes?

Yes that does! My grandfather (Edwards son) was born in Birmingham in 1914 as his father was up there working on the railways!  :)

I’ve had a look and managed to find a medal card for Edward James Robinson (assuming it’s him). He started out in the royal Berkshire regiment, which would make sense as he had a child born in reading in 1917. He then transferred to the RE railway transport department. He was discharged in 1919 and transferred to Z class. I have a good feeling about this one all the dots are joining up!
In the theatre of war served box there is just three lines.

Oh also I looked up the pension record and Edward is listed as next of kin for his brother William.
