Searching for parents Dumfries

Hi I have details of Marriage November 1704 Langholm Dumfries Scotland.
Walter Hope born 31/08/1679 born same place.
Margaret Irwine married 20/11/1704 ? West Kirk Dumfries. I have searched for birth record for Margaret and her parents. The parents of Walter Hope were,
John Hope 1645-1681 Langholm Dumfries Scotland and Jean Tapler 1647 birthplae unknown. Any help appreciated.

Hi thank you, a bit confusing ? I wonder why there were 2 entries for marriage. I note two different locations. Walter was born 31/08/1679 and brides were nearer ( but not always ) nearer same age. Therefore 21/01/1676 ? father Edward  Irving possibility Yes surname differed in spelling of my ancestors sometimes Irvine/Irving. ? I wonder if entries were two couples that were married, of same Christian names, also why did first entry not show day of month.  Sorry if I read this wrong. Just realised marriage 20/11/1704 was in Westerkirk this was were I believe Margaret was born. Marriages were normally  performed in parish of bride.

I wonder why there were 2 entries for marriage. I note two different locations.

What the church recorded is the proclamation of banns rather than the eventual marriage ceremony. If a bride and groom lived in two different parishes the banns had to be called in both, so there will be two records of the same event.

The original documents will tell you which parish was the bride's and which the groom's.

Westerkirk is a parish in the county of Dumfries, not a 'West Kirk' in the town of Dumfries. It is in the north-east of the county, next to Langholm, so the index to marriages contains no evidence of either party being born in (the parish/town/burgh of) Dumfries.

Thank you. I can understand this now. My ancestors were all born in Langholm Dumfries so I will see if I can sort this out as to where Margaret Irwine/Irving was born.

It looks like Walter & Margaret only had two children?

I wonder if this could be Margaret, less than 20 miles from Langholm?

I note they had 9 children there, the second Walter was the youngest born 1679, I assume the first died between 1672 & 1679.

Thank You. Yes these are are my Ancestors John Hope and Jean Talpher  My records show. Jean Talpher born 1647 She married John Hope 0n 18/06/1668 in Langholm Dumfries-shire, although I only have 4 children.
Son Robert Hope born 1669 in Langholm Dumfries-shire
Daughter Helen Hope born 1673 Ditto.
Son Andrew Hope born 1679
Walter Hope born 1679 Langholm Dumfries-shire. ( TWINS )
Death of Husband John Hope 1681 Langholm Dumfries-shire at the age of 36
I would appreciate it if you would let me have names of other children.
