Hesketh, Peter b. 1859 baptism???
« on: Saturday 14 November 20 22:35 GMT (UK) »
Hello there,

I'm struggling to find a baptism for Peter HESKETH b. 11/02/1859 in Toxteth, Liverpool.

I have Peter's birth cert. He was born at 10 Mann Street, Toxteth. His parents are Thomas HESKETH and Margaret nee. MILLER.

Also looking for the marriage of Peter's parents and baptisms for Peter's siblings Robert c. 1851 and Mary Ellen c. 1860.

I've found a sibling of Peter:
Thomas b. 31/01/1855 bapt. 05/03/1855 at St. Patrick, Toxteth (but can't find a death and this child doesn't appear on the 1961 census).

Peter went on to marry in a C of E church, so if he was raised catholic, he didn't remain catholic. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many, many thanks,

Kirsty  :)

Catholics in England weren't required to marry in a Catholic church until 1908. There were 2 Anglican weddings among my Catholic ancestors in 2nd half of 19th C in Lancashire. Their children were baptised in Catholic churches.

There is this baptism 24 May 1874 at St Chad, Rochdale:
Peter HESKETH, father Thomas and mother Margaret. However it says birth date 28 Sept 1859. There is only one birth registration in that year that I can see. Is this the same Peter?  :-\

That looks promising, Maddy.
In 1881 4094/40/4 , the family are living in Royton which is between Oldham and Rochdale.

In the same year as Peter’s baptism, there is this baptism at St Chad’s, Rochdale
February 8th 1874
Mary Ellen Hesketh born October 8th 1861 - same parents. On both these records Thomas is a Furnace Man.
The birthdate seems wrong again, as Mary Ellen is 6 months in 1861 census.

I'm not getting this one at all.

A bit more info would help.

On LancsOPC-Thomas (snr) seems to have been a waterman/boatman.

Baptism: 29 Nov 1857 St Barnabas, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Thomas Hesketh - [Child] of Thomas Hesketh & Margaret
     Abode: Mann St
     Occupation: Waterman
Baptism: 5 Mar 1855 St Patrick, Toxteth, Lancashire, England
Thomas Esketh - [Child] of Thomas Esketh & Margt. (formerly Millar)
     Born: 31 Jan
     Godparents: Mary Marr
Notes: Private [month of baptism has been altered]
Baptism: 5 Mar 1855 St Patrick, Toxteth, Lancashire, England

Probably lost the plot again. :)

Maureen
