Re: Looking for burial of Zebulon NEWINGTON in 1810 * COMPLETED*

Located on FindMyPast a transcribed burial for a Zebulon NEWINGTON at Newenden, St Peter on 01 Mar 1808.

The Will of Zebulon NEWINGTON as posted above is clear that both the declaration year and proved year are the same - 1810.

Thus either the burial transcription is incorrect  or it is for a different Zebulon NEWINGTON.  I cannot see any other reason for the differences but others may be able to....

Does anyone have access to images of the burial?  Perhaps this is clearer?

Hello BumbleB,

Thanks so much for that clipping.

Its a bit of a mystery.  Did you get a chance to look at the clippings which clearly note 1810 ???

I wonder if the problem is the vicar's poor recording.

Up until 1807 there are 2 or 3 burials in the parish each year, each clearly headed.

There is a heading for 1807 with a burial for August, then Zebulon's in March.  That doesn't make sense.

There are no burial entries for 1808 or 1809.

The entries below Zebulon's are in a different handwriting & format and begin October 1810. They just have the year at the end of the entry.

So I reckon Zebulon's burial could have been any time between August 1807 and October 1810.

Yes, bearkat, the clip I posted didn't show that fact - re-posted the enlarged image.

The rector of Newenden, Thomas Morphett died in 1812. The attached clip shows that he held other livings. I imagine the registers had been filled in by curates and parish clerks for some time, perhaps proving Bearkat's theory about poor recording.

Thank you bearkat, Top of the Hill and BumbleB,

I loved the analysis undertaken by bearkat and I agree as it makes sense.

I go back to the Rootsweb transcription and it noted a year was not provided coming to a similar conclusion as bearkat.

Its clear that Zebulon died between the date Zebulon developed his Will and the date it was proved and 1 March fits perfectly so in conclusion I think I will record his burial as 1 Mar 1810 and that Mary NEWINGTON is his wife and Ann NEWINGTON his infant child.

Many thanks once again to everyone for contributing to the discussion.

It's frustrating when you can't rely on the accuracy of parish records.

The Bishops Transcripts should be a copy of the parish register.  You can just imagine a vicar or parish clerk with a scrap of paper trying fill to complete records at a later date. It certainly doesn't help family historians.
