GR2 - I cant thank you emough for your time in doing this. he was clearly a very religious, god-fearing man and it gives a sense of his thoughts on that journey from Scotland to the promise land.  Thank you once again - I dont know how you managed it!

Mention of apples in reply #8 may be a reference to "comfort me with apples" from the Song of Solomon. They may have been metaphorical rather than literal apples.
