William Parker
« on: Thursday 19 November 20 11:18 GMT (UK) »
William Parker born 1842 Tidenham Bristol, parents Phillip and Catherine Parker.  In 1865 he married Annie Russ born 1844 in Westbury, her parents were George and Anne Russ.  William and Annie appeared to live in Bristol and Cardiff during their married life.

They had 5 children:
Ellen Sophia 1866-1868, Ellen was born in Bristol but died in Cardiff
William George 1869-1941 born in Swansea
James Henry b1875 Penarth, Glamorgan
Thomas Lewis b1881 in Cardiff died 1957
George Richard b 1881 in Cardiff

They appeared to have quite a unsettled early life, father was a seaman and mother worked as a housekeeper to various families, William seemed to live with his Grandparents some of the time.

Anyway the problem I have come across is in 1911 the father William Parker is down a widowed living in Clifton Bristol with his sister in law and Niece. While wife Annie is still alive living with her second son and his family in St John's street Cardiff, she is also down as widowed, in 1901 she is down as widowed but the word looks crossed out

To make matters worst the 1911 census translation gives Williams year of birth as 1872 age 39 but looking on the original copy he is age 69. he is now a newsagent. William's brother was Edward James born 1862 married to Rose Maidment.  In 1901 William again is down as widowed and still a marine but living with Edward and family.

I am confused have I got the wrong William or Annie, need some help please.
Any help would be appreciated

baptism for William George Parker in Penarth 14 June 1871, son of William, mariner, and Annie of Salop Street. Baptised the same time as another son Edwin John, birth registered june qtr 1871 cardiff vol 11a pg 276 mmn Ross.

The widow is crossed out in 1901 because it was in the relationship box, so crossed out and boarder written instead, then wid in marital condition.

Not housekeeper to various families, just one man - Richard Lewis.

She may be on the census as housekeeper but I've seen that used for a couple who aren't married. Too much of a coincidence that the youngest 2 boys have Lewis and Richard as their middle names?

Burial in Penarth for Richard Lewis 72 21 Feb 1900. His wife, Eleanor, was buried in Penarth age 45 21 July 1875.

I had alot of information on William George Parker already so on checking again its not the William living with Rose and Sophia in 1901/1911.  William George is married following in his father's footsteps as a Mariner, with 8 children.

This is the 1911 census that I am confused about, although it gives William's age as 39 born 1872 on the original his age is 69.  Should mention that although William George was baptised in 1871 he was born in 1869, GRO birth reg (Parker, William George Russ GRO ref 1869 j quarter in Swansea vol 11a p 598)

it looks like the William & Annie's marriage broke down and he considered himself a widower. That could explain no wife, but children. His age in 1911 is 69, but you need to look at the years of marriage and number of children on that census.
