Alexander and Hilda Steele NSW
« on: Sunday 22 November 20 18:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I've been researching my family tree for many many years but have yet to really do any research outside of the UK. In aid of assisting my DNA matches I am trying to trace as far to present day as possible but I'm now coming across family that went to Australia and struggling to find much about them.

My g.grandfathers brother Alexander Thomas Steele bn.1876 Cotes, Staffordshire, England (sometimes Lipley farm, Shrophire) was in 1901 a drapers assistant in Birmingham, England and the next I find him... He has died in 1926 in his company's building in Wentworth Avenue, Sydney. There are several newspaper reports about it and they tell me he had separated from his wife Hilda and they had one child together. I have found again from the newspapers that Hilda died a year later.

My struggle is I can't find documents showing when he left to go there. I'd like to know when they married and who the child is.

Can anyone help point me in the right direction?

Many Thanks

Katie

Just a note of warning so there's no confusion -  there's is lots of information available about a Norma Jean STEELE, b NSW 1923. Unfortunately the NSW BMD birth indexes are not open past 1920.  An on-line tree suggests that this Norma is the daughter of James Steele and Sylvia Saunders, and your Norma b 1920 so not your person.

I wonder who took care of your Norma as by age 7 she had lost both parents.  Also, perhaps she changed her name later.

Hi there,

They married in 1906 in South Africa:

Hilda was from Australia so perhaps her daughter went to stay with family?
