New matches!
« on: Monday 30 November 20 16:50 GMT (UK) »
I just had a look at my 'new matches' on ancestry and was shocked to see there are only 6, one of which I've already viewed.

That really does show the effect of removing the lower cM matches combined with the lull at this time of year.
Lets hope that people were waiting for the sale, and things will improve soon.  When I bought my dna test at this time of year, the result came through at Christmas.

On the positive side, that's a few weeks to really concentrate on those hard to work out matches that I already have.  ;D

:o  If I had 6 new matches I would be thrilled - I get one every 6 weeks or so!

I've had 12 in the last month - one was my 1st cousin who I knew about and the others were between 15 and 8cMs

A few weeks ago I was pleased to see a new match and checked it.
I saw that my husband also had a new match - it was the same person  :)
4th-6th match to both of us but no information.
This is about the third shared match I have found and there could be more, I suppose.

I have a whole batch of “new” matches that I still have not bothered to look at.

No trees and a user name like lankylarry offer practically zero chance of a find.

Yes the shared matches option may give a clue to which part of the family branch they link back to but that is more likely just a vague idea.

A low cM match and you can be 7 or 8 generations back before you get to a common ancestor.

Looks like Christmas might have come early - just looked and I now have 51 new matches, my mom's account has 84.

So that's looking a bit more interesting than for a while  :)

Yes, I've noticed a flurry of matches in the high teens-low twenties in the last few days.  Only a few have trees though. Some are a wee bit OTT - more listings of ancients with aristocratic titles than 'real' proven ancestors  ::)

I had none or just one or two for several weeks, then in the last three days about 8 - 10 a day. All quite low cM and most with no tree or very small tree. Checking a few out, several of the matches only registered with Ancestry in early to mid Nov 2020, which sounds like the date they got their DNA test kit.
