Rotate sideways pdf doc?
« on: Monday 30 November 20 20:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I have three pdf pages of a document sent to me by a Record Office in England of a inventory from 1588.  It was scanned sideways and I can't figure out a way to rotate it.  I used screen hunter to copy it and then rotate it but the result is a bit blurry.
Would anyone know of a way to rotate the original pdfs?
Many thanks

Rather than copy can't you download it and then rotate it?

I have downloaded the docs but but I can't see anywhere that gives me the ability to rotatethem.  Maybe it's because I only have the free Adobe reader and rotating it is not an option.

I've done it before by

 'open with'      Fireefox

Then go to >> at top right and choose 'rotate clockwise'.

In Acrobat Reader, click on "View" from top menu; then "Rotate View".

I'm using Acrobat Reader DC version 2020.013.20066 on Windows 7.

Shift, Ctrl, "+" to rotate clockwise.
Shift, Ctrl, "-" to rotate anti-clockwise.

I am such a dill!!  I didn't see the "View" at the top of the page.  It must be turning 70 this year, I'm losing my marbles.

Thank you both for your help.  I also opened it in Firefox and was able to rotate so I will remember that trick.

So grateful to you both for your kindness in replying.

One prob that I've jsut found - I opened an upside down pdf and opened and rotated both ways and saved with a new name but when I  opened them up again, they reverted to upside down  ::)

PS - it never used to be like that!

Yes, you are right.  I used "save as" using Firefox and Adobe reader and both times when I opened the new file it had the document sideways again.
Strange but at lease I can now see what the doc looks like when it's rotated to the correct position.

PDF is intended to preserve the formatting of documents, even where that formatting is wrong.

To make proper changes, you need a PDF editor. There are several online, but I have not tried ANY of them, because I already have the "full-blooded" Acrobat. It's elderly now (2008!), but works perfectly well under Win10.

Authors of PDFs can set properties to forbid editing, or even printing, but most of those organisations promptly forgot the password they had used, so those PDFs are not common. The ones I've seen were company annual reports, where you don't want ne'er-do-wells adjusting the numbers.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.
