Black and Tans register
« on: Monday 07 December 20 18:02 GMT (UK) »
Has anyone ever gone to Kew public records office where I understand there is a book with names of men who enlisted for the Black and Tans.  There are a couple of names I need to find out if they did enlist.  Maybe I am grasping at straws.  Thanks

Hi,

There are some records of the Royal Irish Constabulary at Ancestry and FindMyPast, they might have who you are looking for. If you don't have access you could give us the names and I can check for you.

Regards,
Daisy

Not having much luck.  The two people I am interested in are William Cormack Burnett, born 12th August 1899 Aberdeen and
Robert Rayner North Cormack born 23rd May 1899
The family story is that my grandmother confessed to her youngest son when she went to live with him because of her health, that she had had an illegitimate son, no name, and obviously wasn't brought up by her, but she did say that he had joined the Black and Tans, so we are thinking that he may have been brought up by another member of the family and lived nearby, hence her stating he had joined the black and tans.  Any help would be appreciated. Regards

Barry, from your details, must be the next generation given the birth year of 1921. You would think this Robert was potentially the son of Robert. See below for further details. Such a distinctive set of names.

OBIT from 2004 here:

https://edmontonjournal.remembering.ca/obituary/robert-cormack-1065983178

Possible further obit for father? It is showing on newspapers.com (never used it myself) and starts:

Calgary Herald from Calgary, Alberta, Canada on January 23 ...
www.newspapers.com › newspage
23 Jan 1989 — ... Elbow Drive S.W. Telephone: 243-8200 CORMACK Mr. Robert Rayner North Cormack of the Cedars Villa Nursing Home, Calgary formerly of ...

Maybe someone here can access?

There are WW1 enlistment papers for William Cormack Burnett.

First enlistment:

He enlisted in 1917 in Aberdeen at the age of 18.
Address 15 Allan St, Aberdeen.
An apprentice shipwright at the time.
Father Robert given as NOK (had mother died by now?).
Regiment Scots Fusiliers (big black line through it).
Discharged to Shipbuilding in February 1918.
A number of transfers to other regiments.

Second enlistment:

Re enlisted in Aberdeen on 14 April 1921.
An unmarried shipwright at the time.
Showing as having been in R.A.M.C.
Assigned to the 51st Highland Dir. R.E. Defence Force.
Same NOK and address

A lot of detail for these years and movements within regiments etc.

Sorry for the delay in replying.  You ask if his mother had died and that is why father Robert is NOK.  No she was still living.
If he was an apprentice in the shipbuilding, I would have thought he was exempt from enlisting.
I was rather hoping he may have been the illegitimate son of my grandmother and was brought up by the Burnett family, who were related to the Cormack family who brought my grandmother up, she being illegitimate.
But many thanks for all that info, I will put that on my file.  People on Rootschat are so generous with their time.
