Hi I can see the 1881 Census with Sidney as a Nurse child, any clue what that means and where is his mum/dad.  This is strange.  LOL.  Thanks Dianna

A nurse child was a bit like a foster child,  possibly placed in the household on paying basis by the mother, whilst she worked somewhere, or by the local poor law union as an alternative to the baby being in the workhouse

Hi So sorry.  Beatrice AVES is the wife of Sidney G. BLANK, married here in NSW 1914.  Alice Petherbridge is Sids mum on his marriage certificate and Henry Stockman BLANK is the father.

Looks like Henry S BLANK died in Jerilderie NSW. in 1896, cannot find a death notice.  Dianna

I have been looking for possible Alices. This one in 1881 is living very close to Newton Abbot and Torquay. Note her name in later census is “Pethybridge”. She never seems to marry, nor is she listed as having an occupation, (in the transcipts at least)

Note added - her mother's name is Mary George Pethybridge. Not sure if the second name GEORGE is significant or a red herring.

Wow this story just keeps getting sadder by the minute.  If this is Sidney's father dying at only 36 years of age.  I'm surprised Sid knew his parents names at all!  I'm beginning to wonder if he came to Australia using another name!  How long was he with that family from the 1881 Census.

Sounded like no one was interested in claiming him!! Unless Alice died in child birth or was in the workhouse.  Sad really.  Thanks everyone for their input, it's great. Dianna
