Hi My head is spinning a bit really.  LOL.

To recap!  On the 1881 Census I'm looking at now there is RICHARD Mills with wife Frances nee Petherbridge and Granddaughter Mary Elizabeth Petherbridge!  Correct!

So does that possibly mean that the mother of this child baptised 24 April 1873 is the SAME mother to Sidney George Petherbridge (Blank) who was born/baptised in the Workhouse also in Devon in 1880, who came to Australia possibly as KINCH.

Does Mary P? MILLS show up in the 1881 Census as Mills/Pertherbridge as she married the guy William Henry KINCH in 1883.  Hope we can sort this out, really twisted isn't it!!

Thanks everyone for your help.  Kindest regards Dianna

PETHBRIGE, ANNIE  GERTRUDE
Q2  1875
NEWTON ABBOT  Volume 05B  Page 127

I think this might the child - I looked for her birth yesterday but missed it with that spelling.
This child Annie dies in Sept quarter 1876, age 1+ in Newton Abbot

We know that Mary came to Australia in 1883 with only 1 child, so it is probable that the other was either dead or living elsewhere. You would think if an 8 yr old child was living it would be with her.

The newspaper item was dated 1874 regarding William UGLOW owing child support, so an 1875 birth registration cannot be correct. The child MAry Elizabeth may have been shown in 1881 with her grandparents Richard & Susan UGLOW in Denbury, Newton Abbot. The UGLOWs had a son William showing in the 1871 census.

HI Thanks I have the newspaper item dated 1877 re Uglow.  I will see if I can find the actual details of that item in the newspaper.  Also I agree the other child should be with Mary and William KINCH you would think if alive!! I will see exactly which paper that item was in and details if I can. Dianna

Great, I don't have access to any British newspapers to see 1874 or 1877 reports.
If the missing child is Mary E Uglow - looks like she kept that name, and was adopted by the Uglow family

Hi
I will just add these snips to the mix in case they have future relevance.
I doubt they are very helpful

https://www.archivessearch.qld.gov.au/
Item: KINCH, William Henry (archivessearch.qld.gov.au)
Wm Henry insolvent as a plasterer in 1889

https://www.archivessearch.qld.gov.au/
Item: BLANK, Sidney George (Criminal) (shorthand) (archivessearch.qld.gov.au)
Sidney George BLANK had a court appearance in Qld in March 1929.

I include this death because perhaps Alice/Mary/Maria, if travelling with her son may revert to the same surname as his and the one he continued to use.

Death
Alice BLANK
b. about 1857
Died at Yarrawonga, Victoria in 1899
Reg. 7981

Yarrawonga is on the Vic/NSW border.  Probably about 200 kilometers south of Wagga Wagga where Sid's first marriage was.

Hi Sue thanks very much for the extra information.  I will follow up on this, hopefully something comes of it.  I have S.G. BLANK living in Bankstown NSW from 1928-1933 on the Sands directory, if that is SIDNEY GEORGE I'm not sure. I have to get his son Lloyds birth certificate as he was born in 1930, pretty sure in/around Bankstown.  No father on Lloyds birth certificate I was told, will follow up on that too.

Very interested in the  Court appearance though, there cannot be THAT many Sidney George BLANKS around surely.  Kind regards Dianna
