Try as I might I cannot find the 1851 census mentioned above?

It's there, Colin. Cowpen Square, Cowpen. Household of a Robert Smith

Just a thought ~

I see that the head of household was a Robert (Smith). If James was possibly illegitimate, might he give a name that he knew. The vicar/clerk would have probably asked 'father's name? and he might have just replied Robert.

I've seen this a few times but there's no real name of proving it  :-\

There's a family in Tranent, Haddington/East Lothian  that might be him

Robert Wood, 55, b. Ireland
Elisabeth, 34, b. do
James 11, b. East Lothian
Salley, 7, b do
John, 4, b do
Thomas, 1, b. do

James  is not with the family in 1851. They are living Coal Nook (?), Tranent. Robert given as a  Hawker, earthenware

It is probably Coal Neuk Tranent as there is a street called Coal Neuk Court there today.

Not sure if this is the same family in 1861 that Gadget found , but note Thomas(son) is a coal miner.

It looks like the same family, ev. This is them in 1851.  It looks as if Elizabeth became Bridget between censuses!
