Colin - did you not see this?

The closest match is for a family in Ayton Berwickshire, or a family in Roxborough but in both cases the individuals seem to be in Scotland in 1851 when James Wood is first recorded in the New Hartley census. I'm wondering if its possible that the family still registers James Wood as living in Scotland even though he has moved to England.

Add - family on the 1851  census - Clackmae, Melrose

Yes regard marriage certificate should narrow things down. As James is shown in the New Hartley census for 1851 I was hoping to narrow down the options, I'm assuming the Scottish census was taken at a similar time ?

"The census records for New Hartley between 1851 and 1891 show his birthplace as Scotland"

Try as I might I cannot find the 1851 census mentioned above?

1861 as posted before no problem.
