Army Abbreviations
« on: Wednesday 16 December 20 17:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi
A friend of mine wants to engrave a watch for his Grandad and I am wondering what abbreviations would be for the full title.

He said his Grandad was in

'1st Battalion Prince of Wales East Yorkshire's own Regiment Yorkshire'

I suggested 1st Batt. POY E.R Own Regt Yrks but not 100% whether this would be the right form/abbrev. :-\

Can someone with a better knowledge on Army advise me please
Thanks

Was his service in the army before or after 1958?

Prince of Wales’s Regiment of Yorkshire was not formed until 1958, with the amalgamation of these two regiments, then known as the East Yorkshire (Duke of York’s Own) and West Yorkshire (Prince of Wales’s Own) Regiment.

Firstly Battalion is usually abbreviated to Btn.
The Prince of Wales Own Regiment of Yorkshire didn't exist prior to 1958
& was made up of the E.Yorks. (Duke of York's Own) Regt. & the W. Yorks
(Prince of Wales's Own) Regt.
Your man would have been in one of these 2 if he served prior to 1958.
1st Battalion Prince of Wales East Yorkshire's own Regiment Yorkshire isn't a Regt.
Possibly 1st. Btn. P. of W. Own Regt. of Yorks (post 1958).
Or
1st. Btn. E. Yorks. (D. of Y. O.) Regt.
Or
1st. Btn. W. Yorks (P. of W. O.) Regt.
Pre to 1958.
Pretty much as Tony said.
