Looking for the grave in Carmarthen of Henry Campbell Jones, died 28.4.1906
« on: Saturday 26 December 20 11:34 GMT (UK) »
He was killed on Saturday 28th April 1906, in an underground accident at Abercynon Colliery. Only one newspaper mentioned his funeral in Carmarthen, which took place on the following Wednesday, 2nd May, but it didn't say exactly where it was. Is it possible for someone to look up where he was interred, please?

"Henry Campbell Jones, 38, Gertrude-st., Abercynon, is a son of the late Mr John Jones, of the Barley Mow, Catherine Street, Carmarthen, and had only worked at the Abercynon Colliery since August last. He enlisted when comparatively young in the 21st Regiment, and served with the colours for about six or seven years, most of the time at Malta. Some 16 years ago he left the Army, and came to work at Mountain Ash, living at Cefnpennar, and here four years after he married. His wife died a couple of years ago. When the Boer war broke out, the deceased volunteered for active service in South Africa, and served for 20 months with his regiment. During his 15 years' residence at Cefnpennar he worked at the Deep Duffryn Collieries of Messrs Nixon.
The funeral of the late Mr Jones took place on Wednesday, the interment being at Carmarthen."

the burial isn't showing up in the parish records on FindMyPast or Ancestry or FreeReg. The registers on FindMyPast are of Carmarthen St David so burial could be in another parish (St Peter) or a chapel or Carmarthen Cemetery.

Do you have this report of the inquest? It has a photo

Thanks, yes, I had that report, and tried to post the photo of him with my post, but wasn't able to. The deaths seem to have been caused by a combination of bad luck - the chain breaking - and the men ignoring a written instruction. I wonder if the next-of-kin - one became a widow with seven young children to support - received any compensation when the dead and injured colliers were so much in the wrong.

I think he's likely to have been interred in Carmarthen Cemetery, so I'll contact the Town Council to see if they have a record of his burial. Thanks very much, osprey.

Odds are he's in Carmarthen Cemetery then. Cheers, hanes teulu.
