Reading GEDCOM files
« on: Saturday 27 August 05 13:40 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know what happens if you try to open a GEDCOM on a pooter that doesn't have any specific software installed? i want to send a copy of my tree (created with Famly Historian) to my cousin in New Zealand and I'd like to be able to tell him how to read it as he hadn't heard of a GEDCOM when I emailed him to ask if he was interested.

Thanks, Veron  :)

Veron,

Generally, you will get a little windows dialog pop up asking you to select a program to view the file. You can then select a text editor like notepad if you want to try and read the raw gedcom file.

Alternatively, why not point your cousin to a website where he can download a gedcom viewer. There are several freeware viewers around.

The only problem you might get, is if another program uses files with the .ged extension to the filename. If there is such a program on the machine Windows will try to use that to open the file.
