What's in a name?

My great grandmother's birth certificate (copy attached) helpfully confirms that her mother's maiden name was Stewart but it also states that her mother's middle name was Sherlock. This appears to be confirmed in the Signature column (column , where her mother's name is written as Henrietta S Barton. I can't find this information on any other documents I have, PLUS, I always thought that Sherlock was a male name.
The internet isn't very helpful about this so I was wondering if anybody had any thoughts about this use of the name Sherlock.

I would look for Henrietta's birth to see who her parents were - do you know when/where she was born?

Have you followed the family backwards to see if a mother, grandmother had a maiden surname of Sherlock?

Often an older relative's maiden name was given as a middle name.

I see from census she was born 1861 census "Isle of France" 1871 census "East Indies" so maybe not as straightforward.

Per the marriage her father was Robert late sergeant major 29 regiment.

Re the father, I have written to the Worcestershire regiment to see if they have any relevant information. I think Henrietta was born in Mauritius, the modern name for Isle of France but at the moment I have no idea who her mother was. As you say, this could be tricky, but fascinating.

sorry can't help in your research - I have tried - but you might like to know I worked in No 1 Freemasons Row( where she was registered as born 2nd november and abode on 23rd November )?? 1984-1986 ... so I was pleased to see that address - and about 100 metres away was Whitbread Brewery ... a very busy area just on the edge of Liverpool City Centre    Happy New Year and good luck
