Anthony Thomas and wife Susanna
« on: Sunday 03 January 21 12:05 GMT (UK) »
I need a fresh pair of eyes on a couple I am researching. I am looking for help to find any records for ANTHONY THOMAS and wife SUSANNA, possibly around the Dover area of Kent.

They had two daughters, Elizabeth born 1773 and Catherine born 1777. Their son, Anthony Lewis Thomas, was born 1779 in Dover, Kent. Anthony Lewis Thomas married Ann Maria East in 1801.

The parents names were found on the baptism records but I cannot find any other information about them apart from that Anthony Thomas died in 1790 in Dover. I cannot find any birth of marriage records for Anthony or Susanna. (A lot of other trees online show Susanna's surname as Tremaine, but I believe this to be a mistake from misreading the baptism documents).

Can anyone help me shed any light on this please? TIA.

I think they could possibly be, yes. I am just researching into them as we speak.

I composed this reply last evening, then the internet went down! Try again.

     4 children baptised Canterbury - Elizabeth 1773, Susanna 1775, Catherine 1777, Anthony Lewis 1779.
Anthony died 1790 in the workhouse.
I feel he may not be a local man, with the surname Thomas, and a son named Anthony Lewis. Welsh?
A marriage in Canterbury at about the right time may tie in with your mention of the name Tremaine, but is not entirely helpful! See below. I have not been back to re-check, but I think this was the only marriage coming anywhere near.

Thank you for your reply.

When looking at the baptism certificate it shows the names Tintony and Tremaine on the direct opposite page, which leads me to believe someone has misread the baptism records when researching and it’s just been copied and copied into other trees.

Either that or it is actually them and it’s been written incorrectly, and they got married at the same time they had the children baptised.
My immediate thought was Welsh but have yet to find any evidence.

I don't quite understand. What do you mean by the baptism certificate? I am looking at the baptism register for Holy Cross Canterbury, 1773, baptism of Elizabeth. The children were all baptised at different times?

Apologies, not the baptism certificate. I think it might be the parish records.

On the left are the three children, on the right is Tinthony/Tremaine.

Not sure what that is, but it is not a parish register. It appears to be arranged in surname order.
This is the Parish register entry for Elizabeth.

That surname of Tintony is so odd that I wonder if it was muddled thinking by the parson or his clerk mixing it with Anthony, in which case, Susanne Turmaine could be right.
I don't have access to the on-line trees you have seen, but I have found a baptism in Canterbury for Susanne Turmainne in 1754, father Jean and mother Catherine, which sounds French. It is a Familysearch record, so no original is available on the site I am using.
Just checked Familysearch and the baptism was in the Walloon Church in Canterbury. (Huguenot)
(You may already have that information!)
