It would make more sense that Robert was Matilda's son from the census data you revealed.  There is a ROACH male birth Apr. 25, 1907 in Lawrenceville, NY (with Reg. #) in the online NY state birth indexes. Must be Robert. The Registration might reveal the father's name and I should write or email the local county clerk or archives to see if they have the details.

There were numerous FAY families living in the area, at that time.

Interesting.  Just found an online tree which gives Fay Dewey and Matilda Roach ?  No details on Fay Dewey though.
