1841 & 1851 Census Look Up - Stoughton/Walderton
« on: Saturday 27 August 05 18:12 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find out more about the Wrapson/Rapson family from Stoughton/Walderton.  Would it be possible for someone to look them up for me in both the 1841 and 1851 census?

I'm particularly interested in:-

John Rapson (b1783 Stoughton); and
John Wrapson (b1803 Bepton).

(If there are any older Wrapsons, that would be very helpful too.  The parents of John Rapson (b1783) were John and Elizabeth Rapson - I have no information on them, so I don't know whether they would have still been alive in 1841).

Thank you for your help.

Sussex Marriage Index
Bepton 14 Aug 1803
John Rapson N marden (Banns Bach) to Elizabeth Boxall opt (Banns.sp) (B)
witnesses Wm Denyer Wm Hewett
There are two later marriages in Stoughton
17 Nov 1832
John Rapson otp to Mary Goodall HAM Chalton (B)
18 Oct 1835
John Wrapson to Sarah Lamburn (Lambourn) (B) botp (B)

May help.   I have a feeling that there is no index to the 1851 for that area.

Hi Andrea and Chris,

Thanks for the info.

It was interesting to note that one of the witnesses of the Rapson/Boxall marriage was a William Denyer.  Their grandson, John Wrapson (b1843), set up a cartage contractors business in Hove in the 1870s which was later known as Wrapson & Denyer - Denyer previously having been his foreman.  So it looks as if the two families went back quite a way!

Andrea - could you possibly look up the following for me?

1.  Is there any reference to the burial of Elizabeth Rapson (nee Boxall), wife of John (b1783), around 1832?  She would have been in her late 40s/early 50s I believe.

2.  Is there any reference to the burial of an Elizabeth Rapson, March Quarter 1843?  I'm hoping that this was the mother of John (b1783).  She would have been in her 80s by this time.

3.Do you know how far back the records go for Stoughton and Walderton?  I was wondering whether there would be any reference to a marriage between a John Rapson and Elizabeth circa 1783?

Chris - On the 1841 census, Sched 11/Page 14 for Walderton, is Mary RAPSON, 40 correct?  Or should it be Sarah?  There are so many Johns, Marys and Elizabeths - I'm getting confused!

Kind regards,

JJS

hi
The only John Rapson to an Elizabeth is in Petworth 25 Feb 1766  Elizabeth Morley.    This is just the Sussex Index though and if the bride was from another county they will probably have married there.  Not far to Hampshire.  According to Philimore's atlas of parish registers
Stoughton records from 1671 to 1918 are at Chichester and from 1571 to 1876 are on the IGI.  Odd that the IGI starts earlier.  That may be an error.   It is a lovely little church.  My son married there a couple of years ago.   Walderton does not appear in Philimore.  Does it have a church?   I cannot recall seeing one when I have been there.
NBI has a burial for Elizabeth Wrapson at Stoughton St Mary 25 April 1832.  She was 48.
There is no reference in 1843 on the NBI.   It might be worth checking the actual register.

Thanks for the info.

Looking at a map, I can't see that Walderton does have a church.  On an 1843 birth certificate I have just received, it states "Walderton in the parish of Stoughton".
