Hi again,

Could you give the details for William Heywood’s death please? That will help.

Here is William and Betty Jepson in 1881 with daughter Mary E Heywood and grandaughter Alice Jepson plus other family members.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q275-M7JX
For ‘Mopley’ read Mossley. - as in 1871 census.

The March quarter birth for Alice Heywood in Chorlton has a mother’s name of Timperley so not yours.

The information already posted does fit - William’s death might help as I said.

Some of the difficulties for you may be that some of the areas around Oldham/Ashton under Lyne are found in Oldham/Ashton under Lyne and also Lancashire or Cheshire depending on the record.

Cheshire BMD (for the now Tameside area) shows the marriage of William Heywood and Mary Elizabeth Jepson as 1872 Ashton under Lyne, St Michael. Unfortunately these records do not seem to be online. Do you have William’s details from the marriage certificate?
http://cheshirebmd.org.uk/index.php

Cheshire BMD also shows Mary Ann’s birth in Knott Lanes sub district and she is also on GRO records as born in December quarter 1872.
Is this what you have? Do you have a birth record or baptism with William’s occupation?

Apologies - just reread your message
I have Mary Ann Heywood as being born 29/12/1872 and baptised 05/11/1876 at St Mark, Glodwick.

I see William is a Cotton Spinner and they are living in Becket Meadows, Glodwick.
(I drive through this area and the church every day going to the park for our walk :))

Thanks Ladyhawk.
Heywood is a popular name so may be other similar records :)

This is a possibility -just a possibility

1871 4068/24/39
Chapel Street, Lees
William Heywood 17 yrs Cotton Piecer b Saddleworth
With mother Mary and sister Phoebe, 15 yrs

I know that age is out a bit - Phoebe could be 13 yrs  :-\

1861 2977/23/38
Chapel Street
Mary and several children including William 9 yrs and Phoebe 3 yrs

Looking at birth records Mary’s maiden name is perhaps Bottomley

There is a Leesfield St Thomas baptism for Phoebe Heywood in 1880 - birth 1856 and parents John, a stone mason and Mary abode  New Earth

There is a published family tree for the family of John Heywood and Mary Bottomley.

There is mention of a ‘marriage’ (no record found added) to Susan Matthews

There is no census entry recorded in the tree for 1881 but in 1891 the family are at 1891 3294/51 transcribed as Heanwood on Ancestry.
William Heywood, Cotton Spinner b Lees

I suppose the death certificate would prove the above to be the wrong William.

I wonder if this is William in 1881 - transcribed as Abm. (Rather than Wm).

The child Elizabeth has mmn Matthews

There are baptisms for the Heywood/Matthews children at Hurst church on Ancestry
