1881 she is Annie Cocks - Jethro was living with the Cocks family in 1881

If Elizabeth Ann had an uncle called Charles Cocks b 1863 - he would have been her fathers brother.  Father James Cocks was b 1841 - 22yrs earlier

She said she was twenty four. Wrong age and wrong father, but then my father used an uncle's name for his father on his wedding certificate, as did his sister. If she was mine she could have quite easily have used Jethro as he was a deceased Naval pensioner.

But would she have remembered Jethro?   ::)

So if you're descended from one of the illegitimate children, are you trying to find Edith later on? Have you tried searching the 1939 register with her exact birth date and leaving surname blank?

There are no E M Cocks, Coomber or Donaghue with her birth date in the 1939 register.

Ancestry won't need more information, ie surname, to search and FindMyPast have approximately ten Edith's born in 1890, but as I'm not a subscriber I can't get any closer than the summary. As FindMyPast gave me 57 options within ten years I wouldn't be too hopeful of the actual date matching anyway.

if you go onto the 1939 Register search on Findmypast, you can enter the day and month of birth as well as year +/= whatever you want.

What happened to the children? Did they not stay with Edith?

I tried FindMyPast and despite wanting only exact matches I got 50 odd matches all for Edith's with years 2 years either side. Because I don't have a subscription I can't get any closer than the summary which tells me nothing other than the year and town. I have no idea what happened to the children I'm afraid. My father became an apprentice seaman at 14 and by 1939 his siater was married and living in Cornwall. I know very little of his brother, Thomas William Henry Coomber (16/10/1916) whose birth certificate shows his mother as E M Coomber(domestic servant).
