Looking for Henry Whiting in 1881 bc1843 west/east haddon
« on: Friday 22 January 21 16:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have Henry married to Martha Williams (but when? First child charles Frederick born 1872 Walgrave). I know she’s Williams, as on GRO, Charles’ mother’s maiden name is Williams.

She is born Shrewsbury. I have her in 1881 with the children, saying she’s married to a railway labourer. 1891 and 1901 they are back together with the right children and ages. However, in 1901 she says she was born in derby.

So, my questions are:

1) where and when did they marry?
2) where was Henry in 1881 (I did see a Henry whiting in Northampton in prison for sixth months for larceny in 1877.)

Many thanks!

Not finding a marriage for them but 1881 is a bit odd isn't it with Martha not head of the house and a
railway labourer boarder "name unknown birthplace unknown"

I wondered if that was actually Henry being incognito!

Interesting as the unknown is a railway labourer. I’ve never seen a name unknown before (other than babies unnamed as yet). I thought it was a bit odd.
The marriage is a strange one.
Perhaps they didn’t marry at all?

Maybe their first child came along a bit unexpected and it was too late to marry in time so they never bothered.

I would guess if Martha supplied the census info she didn't know anything about him but it is odd.
Age for him looks to be 30 but that also has a N/K in the box don't you think - odd.

Definitely odd. A labourer’s dwelling wouldn’t have been very big! I’m sure that she’d have at least known the lodger’s name??

I wonder if it really was Henry, never going to trace Mr Name Unknown that's for sure.  Having the same occupation is rather intriguing being the one fact she did know about him.

If it was your Henry in trouble in 1877 he maybe being a bit furtive.  Unless we can find him elsewhere in 1881 my money is on N/K!

Yes, I agree.
I couldn’t find anything else on ancestry criminal section. My first thought was that he’d been back in prison (always assuming that the 1877 one is him of course!)
Thanks for your second opinion though.

Maybe Mr name unknown was a workpal of Henry's just staying over on census night who she didn;t know, and the enumerator decided to list him as a lodger!
