Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Graveyard - 1902
« on: Saturday 23 January 21 23:47 GMT (UK) »
My Norwegian great-grandmother immigrated to the United States in 1902. She traveled across the Atlantic Ocean in a steam ship, and arrived in Philadelphia 14 October 1902. Unfortunately, her young son, a one-year old, became very sick on the trans-Atlantic voyage, and was hospitalized after arrival in Philadelphia, in a "pest house." He passed away on 8 November 1902. My great-grandmother wrote an account of her immigration. In it, she described the burial of her son. She said the following:
"I was alone, smothered by pain, and no one understood me. I don’t want to dwell on this sad parting with my son, at the funeral parlor, and at his graveside by the beach, where the waves licked close to his grave."
This is the only description of her son's burial site. Does anyone know where this would be? I'm assuming that "the waves" were from the Delaware River, but this is just a guess.

burial records, Odd Fellows Cemetery, Philadelphia

Ivy Section, North
Harold Mork, 1 year, 6 months, of pneumonia, buried November 10, 1902

------------
another book from the same cemetery
says Grave 16 North, #8

he doesn't seem to be buried with family members. there are other people buried in that Grave and section, all unrelated.

apparently buried the same day he died, or the interment date is wrong on the records.

----------
Why is is called Mt Peace and also Odd Fellows Cemetery?

I was finding transcriptions that said "Harold Work, born Sweden, parents Stephen and Mary" but couldn't fit them with the information we had so far. But that's the same cemetery, and same burial date.

Good guess, wrong river.  It looks like she was referring to the Schuykill River.
