Where is Dorothy?

The birth certificate you have is for.....Elizabeth Ellen ROBERTSON?

You need to see the birth certificate for Jessie Moncrieff ROBERTSON born 1898.

Her name, as mother, on this certificate, is the earliest  evidence you have so far that your Mary Markham, born Huntingdonshire, ever existed.

You would hope for a residential address for birth, and name of informant.

Mary MARKHAM, aged ~ 27 at birth of Jessie, would be older than average for birth of first child.

If they are not married it would be because Alec, and / or Mary, are already married.

Alec would seem to be strongly committed to using Moncrieff as a given name, so earlier children to him might also see this name used.

When Alec died, 1917, what happened to wife Mary?

Thanks for all that. I don't believe Dorothy is a child of Alec and Mary - she appears to be on the 1911 census in Yorkshire with parents William and Myra, who look like they were married in Lincolnshire in 1908.
Yes the birth certificate I have is for Elizabeth Ellen - I will have a look at Jessie's birth certificate just in case that throws up some new info.
I do have evidence for Mary Markham in St Neots prior to 1898 - census/probable birth. It's really Alec I know nothing about before. I will keep looking for records of previous marriages.
You're right that Moncrieff is significant - I thought it would make it really easy to track him but no apparent records prior to 1901 for an Alec/Alex/Alexander with that as a middle name :(
